The Curriculum

Ashgrove provides a broad and varied curriculum that is purpose built to meet the needs of all our pupils. Pupils in the Primary and Secondary departments follow a thematic approach developing Routes for Learning, Foundation Phase and National Curriculum skills as appropriate depending on the pupils developmental stage. Each theme is planned to promote the interest, motivation and engagement of our pupils and whenever possible to develop life skills as well as academic skills.

Pupils at Keys Stage 4 develop their own learning pathway and have the opportunity to follow Entry Level courses (levels 1-3) if appropriate. We are piloting the new Entry Level 1 suite of qualifications with some pupils.

Pupils within the Post 16 department also follow an individual learning pathway which can include a wide range of courses and qualifications including BTEC courses, Welsh Baccalaureate at Foundation level, Essential Skills Wales qualifications and Entry Level Personal Progress.

Some pupils integrate with the local comprehensive school to follow particular GCSE courses.

All pupils have access to indoor and outdoor learning opportunities, educational visits, sessions with a sensory focus and a wide range of ICT activities.

In all departments the academic curriculum is enhanced by the Creative Curriculum and Physical Curriculum. Pupils can take part in 1:1 and group work focussed on developing social skills, self esteem and readiness to learn.
